On the show, Hung plays Sammo Law, an overweight but good-natured Hong Kong cop on assignment with the LAPD, who regularly uses his impressive martial arts skills on criminals.

Sammo's other main enemy is an British-Chinese terrorist calling himself "The One" who heads the terrorist organization Scorpio. Lee Hei kills his and Sammo's master Master Reng, before dropping from a helicopter into the ocean. Hei escaped to LA when Sammo got to close to catching him in Hong Kong. The two main enemies of the series is the Chinese criminal and former friend and fellow student of Sammo, Lee Hei. Sammo has numerous enemies, made by his continued police work. During the cultural revolution, his father was imprisoned for standing up to a corrupt official. Sammo's family is not widely talked about in the series, but near the end of Season 2, it is revealed he has a son who ran away because of Sammo's strict teaching methods and joined the terrorist group Scorpio. But even to people who are rude or cruel, like an attention-seeking DEA officer or an FBI agent trying to deport him, Sammo still demonstrates respect (to an extent). Nearly everyone he meets almost instantly likes him for his kindness and patience. Examples of his kindness is helping a young boy find his brother who has fallen on the wrong side of the law at Christmas and when a deranged safe-cracker attaches a bomb to him, he pleads with a gang trying to rob him to get out of the bombs reach so they don't get hurt. He is a very kind and warm-hearted human being, more than willing to help anyone that wants his help. He does not tolerate crime, and is shown to use what might be called "excessive" tactics. He is so dedicated, when on a cruise he came home a day early with criminals he had arrested on board. Sammo is a determined police officer, obsessed with catching criminals and dedicated to his police work. He transferred to the LAPD when pursuing major criminal Lee Hei and his long-lost son, Xian.
He is a extremely well-versed in both martial arts and detective work. Sammo Law is a Chinese detective, well-known and admired by students, dignitaries and superior officers.
