Mackay remembered the demo singer from the previous year and suggested they try her out. They thought the song was a hit but didn't have a singer for it. A year later songwriters Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe came to him with a new song they'd written. The demo was recorded, and the singer was good, but the song wasn't so great and nothing much came of it. In 1975 some friends asked David Mackay to help finance a demo for a young singer they liked named Gaynor Sullivan. The song was a cover of Melanie Safka's hit "What Have They Done To My Song Ma" and it found instant success making the U.S top 20 in 1970.īonnie Tyler - Lost In France - EMI - 1976 The very first record he made was with the New Seekers. Upon hearing the LP, George Martin said it was the best album he'd heard recorded in the Abbey Road studios that year. It has subsequently been sampled and covered numerous times. Their debut album Laughing Cavalier was recorded not long after and featured the hit single "Daydream" which became a hit in dozens of countries but was never really a success in the UK.
They were the first band that Mackay signed upon starting with EMI in London. He caught their show in Paris and was immediately blown away by their live show and instrumental virtuosity. The Wallace Collection were a Belgian band comprising a mix of pop musicians and members of the Belgian National Philharmonic Orchestra.
